After You
After You is a letter to someone I love and miss—someone I lost, still grieve, and ultimately am trying to outgrow.
This piece is about the metamorphosis we all undergo—year by year, breath by breath. We lose our youth and grow into someone new, eternally faced with the challenge of embracing ourselves in every now. It’s a reflection on regret and self-forgiveness, the tinted filter of memory, and the determination it takes to love ourselves in the present tense.
After You contains thoughtful symbolism: The pressed flowers represent aging beauty. The collage of paper holds deeper meaning: grey for aging, brown for the earth we come from and return to, and black for the inevitable shadow of death we each carry with us. There are symbols throughout the poem that reinforce the words.
